It was fun today learning about how to play hockey. The flat side of the stick hits the ball. Maybe one day we might play for the Black sticks, the New Zealand hockey team!

Maths Fun
We have been learning to order and compare objects by length. We read the story of the Gingerbread Man then had the challenge of building a bridge for the Gingerbread Man to cross so he didn't meet up with the sly old fox. It had to be long enough to cross the river. We also compared the lengths of our bridges with the bridge of others using language like longest and shortest.
Who has the longest bridge here?
Great Reading
We have been learning to read in a smooth talking voice. Listen to Olivia reading in her smooth talking voice.

People Who Help Us
We had a visit from a policeman who told us some of the things a policeman has to do. The Police can help us in an emergency and help us keep safe after disasters like storms and floods. We got to look in his car and he put the flashings lights on.
Lincoln Fire Fighters Visit
We have been learning about what to do if there is a fire so the Lincoln Brigade Fire fighters came to school on Wednesday to help us out with our learning.
When there is a fire in the room you need to 'Get Down. Get Low. Get Out.' Here we are practising with the Fire Fighters.

Book Character Day
What fun we have had at school today. We dressed up as book characters, had a parade and did some jump jam. It was a wonderful day.
My Snowman Stories
What do you think of our Snowman Stories we wrote today?
We were also trying to talk with a clear voice.

An Alien Visitor
Look who came to school with Deklyn today, an alien! He even wrote a story at writing time.
This is what he wrote:
I bounced on the trampoline and I pretended to rip a hole in the trampoline!

Reading Stamina
We have been working on building our reading stamina when reading to ourselves this week. We started off reading for five minutes and by the end of the week we were all reading to ourselves for eleven minutes without getting tired or giving up. Mrs Carter thinks we are amazing A+ learners in Room 7.
Community Group Challenge
Great team work Tawhirimatea Community Group in the challenge of building the tallest free standing flagpole with a flag attached. It was not easy but you were very adventurous and gave it a go.

Elephant Toothpaste!
What a great day we had today with the teachers dressing up as scientists and experimenting with all sorts of things that we could try at home. In Room 7 we made elephant toothpaste with Mrs Carter. Look what happened!
Why do you think this happened? What would happen if we used stronger hydrogen peroxide and a bigger bottle?

What is a Scientist?
Scientists study all sorts of things.
We found out today that Mr Johnston is a plant scientist who investigates grasses.
He loves working outside and travelling the world to find out about different grasses to grow.
We asked lots of interesting questions.

Pictures made out of shapes
As part of our maths rotation yesterday some of the children had a chance to work with different shapes. They named the shapes they used and made pictures with them. Have a look below to see what great imaginations our students have. There is a robot (Blake), a dog (Vincent), a rescue helicopter (Thomas) and a stable for a horse (Xanthe). Well done!

Room 7 Writing with Kidpix
On Friday, Room 7 students used the computer program 'Kidpix' to publish some of their writing. They drew the pictures, choosing from different backgrounds, stamps, colours, and writing tools and then wrote their sentence. Their buddies were there to help them if they needed but most of the work, if not all, was done on their own. Well done to all the students in Room 7. Your writing looks amazing!

Grouping and Graphing Cats
This week in maths we have been talking about how to put things into groups by looking at how they are similar and how they are different. We have been reading quite a few Greedy Cat books, so we decided to draw some cats that we know. We then put them into groups and made them into pictographs. Have a look at some of the work the Room 7 children have been doing, it's pretty amazing!
Here is a pictograph with all of the cats that the children drew. See if you can answer all of the questions and write us a comment to see if you're correct.

Ukelele Lessons
Today at Choice and Challenge some children chose to learn to play the ukelele. Some of us have had lots of lessons and some of us played for the first time today. How do we sound?

A 'Jolly Roger' movie made by Josh
Here is a movie that Josh made using Puppet Pals on the ipad. He read from the book 'Jolly Roger and the clever green parrot'. He was the voice for Jolly Roger, the Big Pirate and the Little Pirate. This is the first time he has made a movie like this. Well done Josh!

The Pencil
Listen to Nathaniel's great reading. When we read, we point to each word and we make sure each word looks and sounds right. The picture helps us to know what the story is about. We have been at school for 3 weeks so this is great reading. Our next step will be to make our reading sound just like talking - smooth and natural.
Face Painting
James, Olivia and Thomas had their faces painted at Choice and Challenge. Choice and Challenge is what we do on Friday afternoons. We get to choose from lots of special activities like swimming, ukelele lessons, art and craft, bike riding and riding on our scooters, building with the large construction sets and science activities. We have a parent who comes and paints our faces. She is an artist.
School Milk
At playtime we can drink a carton of milk if we want to. The milk is free. We have to fold the box in a special way when we have finished. We put it through a slot in a light blue collection bin and when they are collected, they all get sent to Asia to get made into roof tiles for houses.
The milk is very good for us, and by recycling the rubbish we are being good to our environment.
